TASTING NOTES
This summertime red shows a complex of fresh strawberries, bright cherry, watermelon Jolly Rancher, pomegranate, rhubarb, and baking spices on the nose. The palate mirrors the nose in addition to lively, soft tannins. The finish lands soft due to a touch of neutral oak aging.
VINEYARD NOTES
Even though these 2 vineyards are a couple miles away, they are differentiated by topography, climate, and soil type. Sprague Family Vineyard is in the Clements Hills AVA characterized by “heavy red, ruddy, rocky loam” soils and rolling hills. Our Estate Vineyard, located in the Mokelumne River AVA lays on flat land with porous, sandy soils. Each of these unique terroirs add nuance and character to the finished wine.
WINEMAKER NOTES
At 80% Grenache Noir and 20 % Cinsaut, each varietal was destemmed and fermented separately on it’s skins for 4 days before being pressed off. This allowed us to retain freshness without extracting too much phenolic content from the skins and seeds. They were then blended to tank along with their light fluffly lees that was stirred periodically. Prior to bottling we transferred this wine, lees and all, to a neutral puncheon for 3 months of aging to develop breadth and texture.
